At the heart of the Cathedral Quarter is Lincoln’s Bailgate, home to up-market independent shops, restaurants and hotels.
Here you will find superb shops located next to the odd Roman ruin, facing Lincoln Castle, or in the shadows of Lincoln Cathedral – Bailgate is a delight.
For fashionistas, there are several chic boutiques, plus designer shoe and handbag shops. Antique shops and art galleries abound. A specialist whiskey shop nestles next to delightful boutiques selling lovely homewares.
From handmade soaps to grandfather clocks, Lincoln’s Bailgate has it all!
But Bailgate is not just for tourists – it’s a very popular shopping destination for locals too – and can boast an award-winning butcher selling its famous Lincolnshire sausages, and traditional greengrocers, florists and bakers.
Walk along Bailgate towards Newport Arch (the only Roman arch in England still open to vehicles) and you will find more shops selling contemporary jewellery (pictured: Colonia Jewellery), gifts, and antiques dotted along this lovely residential street.
If you’re feeling in need of a little sustanance, then Bailgate has some of the best restaurants in Lincoln.
Our two favourite Bailgate restaurants are:
- Thailand No 1 – serving a wide variety of delicious Thai food. Don’t be put off by its garish interior, it really is an up-market restaurant with a lovely conservatory at the back
- Cafe Zoot – a continental-style cafe serving consistently good food
