Lincoln Castle Relaunch

Written By Ben Doyle

For the past 10 years, Lincoln Castle has been undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment, ready to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. On April 1st, the Castle will once again open its doors to the public and offer them a fantastic new experience in history.

The Magna Carta

The famous document will be held at the new David P J Ross vault alongside the Charter of the Forest – the only place in the world you will be able to see both documents side by side.

Entered via the courtyard in the Victorian Prison, the new Magna Carta vault will include the Great Charter wall where visitors will be able to see the highlighted sections of the document, defined in gold lettering, which made the Magna Carta one of the most famous charters in history.

Further inside, you will enter the Magna Carta in the Round – a cinematic experience that will take you through the story of the Magna Carta, King John and the Charter of the Forest.

The vault itself has been specially designed to house this ancient document, with temperature and humidity controlled perfectly in order to preserve the copies stored here. Visitors will not only be able to see the original 1215 Magna Carta but also the Charter of the Forest as well.

Medieval Wall Walk

Also opening to the public on April 1st will be the new Castle Wall tour which offers amazing 360° views of Lincoln city. Take the lift or the brand new spiral staircase up to the wall and you can wall the entire circumference of the castle in one go.

While you’re up there, you can visit Lucy Tower, where many of the inmates of the prison are buried, which was named after Lucy of Bolingbroke, Countess of Chester.

Please note: parts of the wall tour are not accessible to those with limited mobility

Victorian Prison

The Victorian prison stands in the ground of the castle and once housed both male and female inmates. On your visit you will be able to tour the prison chapel and see what life was like for those imprisoned there.

The new tour will include re-enactments, films, and interactive experiences to give you an in-depth view of what occurred behind bars in the Victorian era.

The Castle and its tours will be open all year round* after the new launch;

April to September – 10am to 5pm

October to March – 10am to 4pm
